Our Perspective Home

March 31, 2005 we put a contract down on a home located in historic/hoodstoric Jackson Ward. Jackson Ward is an up and coming area in Richmond rich with history. Originally settled by German, Italian and Jewish immigrants whose influence is apparent in Jackson Ward’s diverse architecture. Jackson Ward is said to be second only to New Orleans in density of original ironwork adorning homes. After the Civil War the area became known as the “Harlem of the South” when many newly freed African-Americans moved into the neighborhood transforming it into a cultural and financial hub for African-Americans in Richmond. Jackson Ward thrived for many years but in the 1950's the neighborhood was dissected by Interstate 95 and has suffered greatly. In 2001 National Trust of Historic Places listed Jackson Ward as one of the top eleven endangered historic places. There have been some recent urban renewal efforts in the neighborhood and we are excited to have the opportunity to live in a neighborhood that played such an important role in Richmond's history.
